[edit] eBook software
There is a wide variety of eBook software available on a wide variety of formats. The most popular formats for commercial eBooks include PDF, MOBI, LIT, and eReader roughly in that order. (ePUB is a new emerging standard format.) Click for more information on eBook formats. If you add dedicated eBook Readers then you would have to add BBeB, the Sony eBook format and Amazon AZW to the list of popular formats.

PalmOS document formats A few notes about documents on Palm devices. All of the programs below except the PDF readers can read PalmDOC files and maybe other formats.
- Adobe Acrobat Reader for PalmOS: This is a version of the Adobe Reader (Acrobat) written for PalmOS. Despite being written by Adobe, some features of PDF files are unavailable.
- CSpotRun An early Palm "doc" file viewer
- Deep Reader: A Palm "doc" file reader for PalmOS PDAs. Abandoned by the author and no longer developed.
- eReader: eReader eBook reading software that was supplied with a number of Palm devices.

- EPUBReader: An add-on for reading ePUB documents with the Firefox Web Browser.
- eTextReader: is a reader intended primarily to read Project Gutenberg TXT files. It can also import a few other formats such as Word, RTF, HTML, PalmDOC.
- Evince: A GNOME reader now available for Windows, reads PDF, PostScript, DJVU, multipage TIFF and DVI.
- FBReader: A universal reading program for lots of formats, including ePUB. Open source.
- Foxit: Freeware PDF viewer.
- HaaliReader: Windows Mobile reader, supporting FB2 and TXT formats, and dictionaries support. Free, open source.
- ICE Book Reader: ICE Book Reader Professional supports TXT, HTML, XML, RTF, LIT, CHM, Microsoft DOC, PDB and PRC, PSION/EPOC books (.TCR) and FictionBook files (all versions) (.FB2, .XML).
- iSilo: A shareware viewer for offline HTML files.
- Kindle for PC: A Reader to allow reading Kindle eBooks on a PC. Can also help manage Kindle devices.
- Lucidor is an ePUB reader for Linux, Windows, or MACOS X. Lucifox is the same except it is an extension for Firefox. Both support OPDS catalogs.
- Martview: A free download that reads PDF and proprietary MART files. There is a converter to create Mart files that can be uploaded to the site.
- Microsoft Reader: Reader for LIT files.
- MobiPocket Reader: Reader for the MOBI format. The Windows version can also serve as a library manager.
- MuPDF: A lightweight PDF viewer.
- Nitro PDF reader: Freeware PDF viewer.
- Nook Study from Barnes and Noble is an eBook Reader for ePUB. It supports ADE and BN DRM books and provides special organization features for students.
- OpenBerg Lector: A reader that uses Firefox. It can read LIT, ePUB, HTML, and CBR CBZ.
- Palm eReader: Palm also produce a version of its eBook reading software for Windows.
- PDF-XChange Viewer freeware PDF viewer. The company offers more complex PDF tools, too.
- PressReader offers a subscription service for periodicals. File format is proprietary.
- Ripple Reader: Recordable eBook Reader for children - books are only available from them.
- Sony Reader App: A good reader for testing ADE based ePub books.
- Stanza Desktop is an eBook reader that features the ability to read books in many different formats (such as LIT, ePUB, HTML, Mobipocket, Kindle, PDF, and RTF) and export to several portable devices.
- STDU Explorer is free file manager for previewing and managing PDF, DjVu, Comic Book Archive (CBR or CBZ), XPS and image file formats (BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, PSD and WMF).
- STDU Viewer is a free viewer for CBR, CBZ, DjVu, FB2, PDF, TXT, XPS, TCR, BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, PSD, TIFF, EMF and WMF files.
- Sumatra PDF viewer: a very fast, light, small, portable open source PDF viewer.
- Talking Clipboard can read ePUB, PDF, HTML, RTF, DOC files and can convert them to audio. It supports inbuilt WordNet dictionary.
- Tome Raider features database like access with in an eBook reader.
- uBook: A simple, lean but powerful eBook Reader. Also uBookLite.
- VitalSource Library provides eBook software that features graphics support.
- yBook: A free eBook reader that supports a two page layout. It can read TXT, HTML, RTF, ePUB and PalmDOC formats.

- Adobe Acrobat Reader: PDF Reader provides reflow for the smaller screen.
- Allreader+ supports TXT, HTML, RTF, FB2, ePUB, DOC, DOCX, ODT, SXW, ABW, ZABW, CHM, PDB/PRC (PalmDOC, zTXT mode 1) and TCR formats.
- eReader: eReader also produce a version of its eBook reading software for Windows Mobile.

- Lister: Basic HTML viewer with support for Palm Doc (PDB & PRC) and GNU .GZ archives. It is a free, lightweight and fast program for devices running Pocket PC 2002 and up.
- Microsoft Reader: for LIT files.
- MobiPocket Reader: For the MOBI format.
- Reader Mobile: Text only PDF and TXT reader that warps text to fit small screens.
- PocketXpdf: Open Source PDF viewer ported to Pocket PC 2003 and later.

These readers work on iPhone and iPod Touch. Note that some can use eBook formats available from several sources while some can only work with eBooks obtained specifically for the application. Not all of these applications will work on the iPad. Some iPhone applications will need FullForce installed to use the full screen resolution.
- Annotater: is available from the Apple store. It reads PDF documents and allows annotation.
- AppEngines, LLC: sells eBooks with the application built-in.
- Bluefire Reader: supports Adobe eBook DRM for ePUB and PDF, including B&N and library DRM. iPad and iPhone apps.
- Books.app: First eBook Reader for the iPhone.
- Book Troupe: lets you store your ePUB collection in Dropbox or Box, and supports social annotation (also available for Android)
- BookZ HD. BookZ was one of the oldest ereader available on the iPhone--it is now available for the iPad. The app offers a reading experience similar to iBooks. It loads TXT files and allows adding additional Stardict dictionaries making it useful for reading other languages.
