There is a wide variety of eBook software available on a wide variety of formats. The most popular formats for commercial eBooks include PDF, MOBI, LIT, and eReader roughly in that order. (ePUB is a new emerging standard format.) Click for more information on eBook formats. If you add dedicated eBook Readers then you would have to add BBeB, the Sony eBook format and Amazon AZW to the list of popular formats.

PalmOS document formats A few notes about documents on Palm devices

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader for PalmOS: This is a version of the Adobe Reader(Acrobat) written for PalmOS. Despite being written by Adobe, some features of PDF files are unavailable.
  • CSpotRun An early Palm "doc" file viewer
  • Deep Reader: A Palm "doc" file reader for PalmOS PDAs. Abandoned by the author and no longer developed.
  • eReader: eReader eBook reading software that was supplied with a number of Palm devices.
  • iSilo: A shareware PalmOS viewer for offline HTML files
  • LionDoc A Palm doc and zText file viewer, based on CSpotRun code
  • MobiPocket Reader: A PalmOS reader for documents in MobiPocket format and Palm doc files
  • Palm Fiction A free, open source reader for Palm "doc", FB2, zTXT, plain ASCII text, and RTF files
  • PalmPDF A free, open source Adobe PDF viewer for Palm OS5 devices, based on a port of the XPDF library
  • Plucker: A free, open source offline viewer for HTML on PalmOS PDAs
  • ReadThemAll: A free, open source reader with an innovative scrolling method.
  • TealDoc: A commercial reader from TealSoft
  • Tome Raider: features database like access with in an eBook reader.
  • uBook: A simple, lean but powerful eBook Reader. Also uBookLite.
  • WeaselReader: A free, open source reader for Palm "DOC" and zTXT files, originally written to view Project Gutenberg etexts.

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader: PDF Reader provides reflow for the smaller screen.
  • Allreader+ supports TXT, HTML, RTF, FB2, DOC, DOCX, ODT, SXW, ABW, ZABW, CHM, PDB/PRC (PalmDOC, zTXT mode 1) and TCR formats.
  • eReader: eReader also produce a version of its eBook reading software for Windows Mobile.
  • Foxit: PDF reader provides reflow for smaller screens.
  • Freda: ePUB, TXT, HTML reader. Free. Supports WM 5 and 6.
  • HaaliReader: Windows Mobile reader, supporting FB2 and TXT formats, and dictionaries support. Free, open source.
  • iSilo: A shareware viewer for offline HTML files
  • Microsoft Reader: Only available for Windows and Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) OS.
  • Lister: Basic Html viewer with support for Palm Doc (PDB & PRC) and GNU .GZ archives. Its a Free Lightweight & fast program which works well on devices running Pocket PC 2002 and up.
  • MobiPocket Reader: - Very popular format.
  • PressReader: offers a subscription service for periodicals. File format is proprietary.
  • Plucker: A free, open source offline viewer for HTML
  • Tome Raider: features database like access with in an eBook reader.
  • uBook: A simple, lean but powerful eBook Reader. Also uBookLite.
  • Unyverse: Read Wikipedia and any RSS news Feed (freeware, Windows Mobile 5.0 or higher and an wireless connection).
  • ZuluReader: is a free reader for Windows and Windows Mobile (PocketPC) devices that reads RTF and ePUB.

These readers work on iPhone and iPod Touch. Note that some can use eBook formats available from several sources while some can only work with eBooks obtained specifically for the application.

  • Annotater: is available from the Apple store. It reads PDF documents and allows annotation.
  • AppEngines, LLC: sells eBooks with the application built-in.
  • Books.app: First eBook Reader for the iPhone
  • Enhanced-editions: Custom application for iPhone.
  • eReader: Ebook reading software from Fictionwise.
  • iPhone Bookshelf: eBook Reader for the iPhone and iPOD touch. Reads several formats.
  • iSilo: eBook reader will roots in PalmOS.
  • Kindle Reader: Share eBooks between the Amazon Kindle and your iPhone
  • Legends: An eBook Reader from ZappTek with eBooks are available though the iTunes store.
  • Libris: eBook reader that can download books from several on-line sources and transfer from a Mac or PC using Libris Desktop. Reads several popular formats.
  • Readdle: for Online Reading
  • Shortcovers: free eBook platform for the iPhone. Sample, purchase and read content in seconds, online or on your mobile device.
  • Stanza: has a native iPhone application that can download books from a built-in Online Catalog or transfer books in a variety of formats from a Mac or PC using Stanza Desktop.
  • Text On Phone: for Online Reading
  • Textreader: reads many eBook formats.
  • Wattpad: is a Java app that can retrieve and read eBooks. These are uploaded to the site by writers or PD text.
  • Yong iReader: Work on any mobile devices. Has built-in dictionary for iphone users.
  • Papers synchonises with Papers on the Mac. Specifically meant for reading research papers.

These readers work on devices running the Android OS.

  • Aldiko - ebook reading application for Android smartphones. supports ePUB and has Feedbooks integration.
  • Libris: eBook reader that can download books from several on-line sources including Feedbooks and Fictionwise and transfer from a Mac or PC using LibrisDesktop. Reads several popular formats.
  • FBReader - has a free version of its excellent reader. Supports epub, oeb and fb2(.zip) file formats. Will be used as the application to open any ePub links from the browser.

  • eFile software: This is a free part of eOffice that reads PDFs, DOCs and TXTs
  • iSilo: now supports BlackBerry.

Most most modern Cell Phones support Java standard for mobile applications (J2ME). Some so-called Smartphones have a standardized OS like Symbian OS, Linux, PalmOS and Windows Mobile that may also run book readers designed for these platforms. The list of products below includes J2ME applications, but also software that is supplement to the list of products shown under the various OS's.

  • AnyView free ebook reader for J2ME phones

  • Libris: An eBook reader for Java MIDP 2.0 phones.
  • MobiBook: A free, open source J2ME reader.
  • QReader: Freeware, high quality reader for Nokia cell phones. Very customizable.
  • ReadManiac: A free, open source, high quality reader for any Java (J2ME MIDP 2) phone.
  • tx2ph: This is a WAP-based reader that can read TXTs, PDFs. Works with any Internet-connected mobile device, including BlackBerries and Palms of course.

  • DSbible is a Bible reading program for the Nintendo. Includes a Bible.

  • Zune ebook creator is a image creator that works from eBook formats to provide eReading capability on the Zune and even digital frames.
  • Bookr is a document reader for the Sony PSP (Play Station Portable) with native PDF rendering. An updated version with DJVU support is also available.
  • PSPKVM is eBook software for a Sony PSP (Play Station Portable).
