JavaScript (JS) is the scripting programming language of the Web. Nearly all modern HTML pages are using JavaScript.

[edit] Overview

Originally JavaScript was conceived for the Netscape browser which needed a lightweight interpreted language that would complement Java (which was already supported) by appealing to nonprofessional programmers. However, JavaScript is not Java. It is a different language although it does use some of Java's naming conventions and syntax.

JSON, JavaScript Object Notation, is derived from JavaScript. It is a general-purpose data interchange format that is defined as a subset of JavaScript's literal syntax.
