Mac OS X is an operating system for Apple Macintosh computers.
[edit] OS X
Mac OS X is based on the Unix Mach kernel and is derived from the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) implementation of Unix in NeXTSTEP. NeXTSTEP was the object-oriented operating system developed by Steve Jobs' company "NeXT" after he left Apple in 1985. The Macintosh pioneered UI was then placed on top of the Unix core.
[edit] iOS
iOS is a variant of the Mac OS that was specifically designed for portable platforms. It is the OS used on the iPad and iPhone (including the iPod touch version).
