Duokan 2013 Installation

These guides are based on the forum instructions in this thread.

There are two known methods of installing Duokan 2013: using KUAL, and through Diagnostics Mode. Diagnostics Mode is the most straightforward, and is what we recommend.

Install using KUAL

This simply uses KUAL (Kindle Unified App Launcher) to launch the emergency.sh script to install Duokan. It is by far the simplest, safest, and most successful. However, it requires you to jailbreak.

1. Make sure you know which model your Kindle is, such as K3, K4, K5, etc.
2. Connect the Kindle to the PC with the USB cable.
3. Put Duokan system files on kindle storage
4. Install KUAL to your Kindle. (follow the instructions in the forum link)
   1. You need to install the jailbreak for your Kindle (check the install prerequisites for KUAL).
   2. You also need to install the shared developer keys to run his kindlet.
5. Add KUAL Duokan Launcher to the Kindle's extensions folder.
6. Add KUAL Duokan Installer to the Kindle's extensions folder.
7. From your Kindle's home screen, open KUAL and run Install Duokan.
8. Duokan will install, and your Kindle will soon reboot.
9. You will get to the Duokan dual-boot bootloader eventually. Press Q to boot to Duokan, and K to boot to Kindle.

Install with Diagnostics mode

Here are the installation instructions for the initial installation of Duokan 2013 on a Kindle 4:

1. Go to the home screen, press the menu button, and select "Settings". The version number is displayed at in the status bar at the bottom.
2. Connect the Kindle to the PC with the USB cable.
3. [Download the latest version of Duokan 2013 from the Xiaomi forums](http://www.duokan.com/download/kindle). Find your device under the forum thread, and use Google Translate if need be.
4. Unzip that archive, and copy the folder "DK_System" to the Kindle.
5. Check your firmware version. Then, open either the folder "K4_4.0.0_to_4.0.1" or "K4_4.1.0_to_4.1.1"
6. Copy the directory "diagnostics_logs" and the files "data.tar.gz" and "ENABLE_DIAGS" from the subfolder to your Kindle.
7. Unmount your Kindle drive (eject the drive on your PC) and disconnect the USB cable (for now)
8. Restart your Kindle 4: Go to home screen, press menu button, select "Settings", press menu button, select "Restart"
9. Your Kindle will reboot into the diagnostics mode. Select "D) Exit, Reboot or Disable Diags", then "D) Disable Diags", then "Q) To continue".
10. After rebooting, your Kindle should allow you to chose between Duokan and Kindle mode. Pick Duokan mode by pressing the leftmost button on your Kindle 4.

Changing the language settings

Duokan 2013 will display menus in simplified Chinese by default. Here's how you switch to your preferred language:

1. From the home screen, press the Menu button.
2. Click the last item on the list from the popup menu (ends with "设置").
3. Press the Next Page `>` button to get to the second page.
4. Select the 语言 (language) option, and select your chosen language, such as English.
5. Press Home, and Duokan will now display in your chosen language.
