Alternatively, see also eee PC 1000H which uses Windows XP Home edition as it's operating system. It features a 6-cell 7 hour battery and 160 GB disk drive replacing the SSD. There is also a eee PC 1000HA for less money that is the same as the H except that is has no Bluetooth built-in and does not support the newer mac Wi-Fi 802.11n protocol, just b/g. The latest model, eee PC 1000HE, has a new keyboard that fixes the problem of the position of the right shift key. It has an extended battery life of over 9 hours and is otherwise similar to the 1000H.
The eee PC 1000HD is an older version. The specs on it are a bit fuzzy in that bestbuy and other vendors in the USA do not match the ASUS web site. The processor is a Celeron 900 MHz, there is 120 GB 5400 RPM disk drive, and smaller battery set with about 3.5 hours between charges.
A comparison of the different Specifications (1000/1000H and 900's) can be found here or an even bigger comparison is eee pc comparison.
Of course standard windows programs can be used as eBook Readers. ASUS has added a feature to allow for screen rotation on its windows machines. This can improve the reading experience by providing a full page like display in portrait mode.
