[edit] Hardware versions
There are separate firmware downloads for each hardware version. Officially a given release may only be for select devices but unofficially other devices with the same hardware version may also work. However this is not guaranteed and you should read the associated discussion thread carefully before potentially bricking your device.
Important Note: The Kobo Aura Edition 2 and Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2 have two versions. The first version is Mark 6 hardware. The second version is Mark 7 hardware. The second version is incompatible with the Mark 6 packages due to a different CPU and they can be identified by checking if the 7th digit of the serial number is a 2.

Kobo does not release the firmware to everyone at the same time; Kobo release based on the Affiliate and the IP address. It can take a month before everyone around the world sees the firmware update.
Manually Install Firmware Guide use it at your own risk. You must install the whole package (upgrade, KoboRoot.tgz, manifest.md5sum).
Also see Kobo Firmware Downloads for the latest official firmware and changelog links, automatically updated directly from Kobo servers. It can also show the firmware versions for different affiliates, a list of all released versions for each device, all in one page. This site also has useful charts showing things like versions by affiliate and version availability by device.
