[edit] Overview

iPad Air for 2019 brings more of our most powerful technologies to more people than ever.

  • The A12 Bionic chip with Neural Engine.
  • A 10.5‑inch Retina display with True Tone.
  • Support for Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard.
  • And at just one pound and 6.1 mm thin, carrying all that power is effortless.

[edit] Features

  • The iPad Air isn’t just a renamed iPad Pro. Also known as the “iPad Air (3rd Generation),” the new model has a 10.5-inch screen and loses the ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate of the Pro but keeps the 2224 x 1668 resolution, P3 wide color, and True Tone features introduced in the older model. It also drops from four speakers to two, like the entry-level iPad, and from a 12-megapixel rear camera down to 8MP.
  • The iPad Air is a 10.5-inch tablet starting at $499. This is offered as midrange alternatives to last year’s entry-level $329 iPad, and the Air effectively replaces the now-discontinued 10.5-inch iPad Pro at a lower price point.
  • The new model includes Apple’s A12 Bionic processor, which represents a significant step up in performance over the iPad Pro, which previously had an A10X Fusion chip. The iPad Air also features the slimmer bezels previously found on the iPad Pro’s front, enabling it to have a higher screen-to-body ratio than the basic iPad.
  • Benchmarks show show that the A12 is running at 2.49GHz with 3GB of RAM which places it in the same league as Apple’s latest iPhones, which use the same A12 chip. (iPhone 11 uses A13 chip.

[edit] Comparison

The new iPad Air reintroduces the Air by replacing the iPad Air 2. By comparison this model has a 10.5" screen vs. 9.7". The ppi remains the same at 264 ppi thus increasing the overall pixels. The Processor is a huge jump from the older Air 2 of 5 years ago (2014). It maintains the thin 2.4" thickness but loses the 4 speaker audio. It is also a significant step up from the iPad 2018 both in screen size and performance. Even with the larger screen it is actually slightly lighter than the iPad 2018. It is the same width and height as the new iPad 2019 and can share the same Smart Keyboard.
