[edit] iPad nomenclature

Over the years of the iPad products there has been confusion over the actual iPad being talked about. Often the name New iPad has been used repeatedly, in other cases the same name is reused. At this time here is how the various iPads can be tracked. In this wiki, to avoid confusion the actual year the product was released will be used to track the duplicate models. The other method is to track the generation of the product:

  • The iPad mini is currently shipping the 6th generation of this device. All have 7.9" screens.
  • The regular iPad is currently shipping the 9th generation of this device. All The early ones up to the 6th have 9.7" screens. The 7th generation has a 10.2" screen and is the same physical size as the 3rd generation iPad Air
  • The iPad Air is currently shipping the 4th generation of this device. The first two had 9.7" screens while the 3rd generation has a 10.5" screen and the 4th Generation adopts a 4.3:3 aspect ratio to achieve a 10.9" screen in the same physical size.
  • The iPad Pro is a bit different in that it has always shipped multiple devices with different screen sizes.
    • The largest screen is always the 12.9" model and the current model is the 3rd generation of that product.
    • The iPad Pro with a 9.7" screen was released once and then replaced with a unit with a 10.5" screen.
    • The iPad Pro 2018 has the already mentioned 12.9" screen and a new device with an 11.0" screen.
    • The 11.0" version is the first iPad not to have a 4:3 aspect ratio. It has a 4.3:3 ratio screen which is the same width as the older 10.5" screens but is taller by removing the button at the bottom while maintaining the same physical size.
    • The iPad Pro 2020 has new generations of the 12.9" and 11.0" models.

See iPadOS#Models for a full list of iPadOS compatible iPads sorted by screen size.
