Verbum Catholic

From MobileRead
Jump to: navigation, search

The Verbum Catholic app is the same basic product as the Logos Mobile app described below. It differs primarily in that it includes different sample books that feature Catholic beliefs. Note that loading both versions will also show a few more sample eBooks. It also features rental sets of books for the mobile version. There is also an equivalent app for the Logos Desktop. For more information see https://verbum.com/ or for the mobile versions see the iOS or Android app stores. It is also possible to use the split screen feature in iPadOS between this app and the Logos Mobile app as it is applicable to both products. The split screen is shown below.

The Verbum Catholic app will provide "The Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition" as a sample book if you don't already own it and will set it as your default Bible. To use it if you don't own it you must have an Internet connection. It also provides the Clementine Vulgate (Latin Vulgate) and a Greek New Testament from Tischendorf as sample books. The "Catholic Daily Readings" and "Verdum Help" are also provided. More Sample books include: A "Catholic Dictionary", "Catholic Pocket Dictionary and Cyclopedia", "The Externals of the Catholic Church: Her Government, Ceremonies, Festivals, Sacramentals, and Devotions", "The Sources of Catholic Dogma", "The Divine Armory of Holy Scripture", "An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine", "A Roman Martyrology".

A feature of this app is that the site and the app offers rentals of sets of books. The license you get for using these books are often marked "Temporary" even when they are not rentals while other Logos sites provide Permanent licenses.

They also have a web app version https://app.verbum.com. The rest of this page describes the Logos Mobile app which is almost identical to the Verbum Catholic version and the Verbum web app is basically the same as the Logos web app. However, this Catholic tool is likely to feature different books and my not include some of your library of books.

Logos main screen version 9 (click three times for full screen image) The very top line is specific to Apple.

The Logos Mobile app is available for most mobile devices including iPhone, iPad, Android phones and other Android hardware which includes the Kindle Fire and the Chromebook.

[edit] Introduction

This page features the iPad but other portable devices are basically the same, although some entries may have moved around. If you can't use this app on your hardware but you have a Web browser you may want to use the URL: https://app.logos.com (See Logos web app). This article began with Logos 8 and is being revised for version 9. For Windows and MacOS see Logos Desktop.

This article will also be useful for the "Verbum Catholic" app, and the two Faithlife apps, "Faithlife eBooks" app as well as the "Faithlife Study Bible" app. All of these apps are based on the basic Logos app. The app named Biblia is the Spanish language version of this app. You can download those apps as well and they can be opened at the same time as the Logos Mobile app providing a way to research something different without disturbing the first app you were using. The differences in the apps are primarily in the names and the eBooks that come with the app. They also differ in the store links. The Faithlife Study Bible app comes with the "Study Bible" sample which is downloaded with it.

Note that downloads are not shared between the various apps but the Internet database is shared. Also note that the app will run with or without an Internet connection. But some functions assume an Internet connection and will not work properly without one. Of course, the books must be downloaded as well to avoid the Internet. If you have more than one, you might like to know which one you are looking at. Use the main menu and select Help. An icon with the name of the App will be at the top.

[edit] App Main Screen

This app is intended for reading. The main screen always shows the book you are reading and will return to this page if you leave the app and then return. The figure in the upper right shows the main screen, in this example, the title page on one version of the KJV Bible. There are icons showing at the top line and at the bottom line in the figure. In addition a line under the top line shows the progress in your reading. The text in the top bar shows the page number, if available and can be used for searching, an icon representing the TOC, the book title as recorded by Logos and finally a menu for tasks related to the open book. The row of icons on the bottom show commands. They are called, left to right: Home, Library, Factbook, Open book access with a number of open books available, Search, Store, and the main menu. Tapping the screen near the center will take both lines and icons away. Tapping again will bring them back.

When reading a book, the Logos Mobile app on an iPad, by default will change pages, when you tap at the right edge to move forward a page or near the left edge to display the previous page. You can also just swipe the screen on the left or right side to change the page. Swiping may be preferred if there are links near the edges since you can accidentally bring up a link when you really want to change the page. You can change a setting to make the pages scrollable if you prefer. Setting the preference to scrolling has the advantage of allowing a left or right swipe to be used to select a different book from the active list. The order that show in the active page group is the order they will switch to so rearranging them can be useful.

On the iPhone, the Android, the Faithlife, and Verbum versions you can tap and drag the page up/or down the screen to scroll the page. This is the default which can be changed to work like the iPad and, as already mentioned, the iPad can be changed to scroll.

When you have the two banners showing you can tap the icons in the bottom edge to bring up different feature screens in the app. The items are listed from right to left in instructions below.

[edit] Menu

The icon on the right edge brings up a menu, that is a scrollable list of commands you can perform. For example: you can bring up the menu and scroll to find the "settings" and then tap to bring up the "settings" screen. Here you can add your sign-on name or pick your preferred Bible translation as default. You can tap "done" to take that screen away. More information on the Menu is below.

[edit] Cart

The other icons work similarly. The "shopping cart" icon will take you to the Logos store and tapping "done" will bring you back.

[edit] Search

The Search icon (Magnifier) icon is new in version 9. This will search all of the open books for the content you put in. Tapping the icon will show a page with samples and instructions. Searching can include a Scripture verse. The search page will end up in the open books and can be deleted or reused similarly. The ... menu can show the help page again.

When reading a book the banner at the top has a drop down menu (3 dots vertically) that has a search choice for searching only that book. If the left search area has a number in it then this is the page number of the book you are reading. Manually changing the number will change the page that is being displayed. Not all books have page numbers available. Due to page size differences the page number in a paper book may be slightly different than the number displayed.

[edit] Active eBooks / Factbook / Library / Home Intro

The stack of books will show you the number of books you have open. Tapping it will allow you to select a different book to view. See More on Active eBooks. The next icon to the left will bring up the Factbook icon and then the Library (See below for more on the Library). Tapping a book will open it in the active screen. The home icon on the left side displays a screen of useful information (see below for more). In each case there is a "done" icon in the upper corner of the screen that can return you to the book you are reading.

[edit] Top banner

The top banner is showing you information about the book that you have open. It shows you the name of the book you are reading and just to the left is an icon that will bring up the TOC for the book allowing you to change places in the book if you wish. To the left of the TOC is a type-in field that can search and go to places in the book. It will also show you the page number you are on. At the top left is an "<" symbol that will return to where you were if you change your location by going somewhere else in the book. This is very useful if you click on a link in the book itself that jumps to another part of the book. Underneath these icon is a line that shows you how far along you are in the book you are reading. At the far right is a menu (3 vertical dots) that allows you to work with the book and display. You can view a brief intro, search for words, change settings such as font size, and other items. You can even change to a different book. See More on Active eBooks below.

[edit] Factbook

Factbook is a major feature for Logos Desktop that has been added to the main menu, but it will also show up automatically. If you select a word it brings up the Factbook and the Word Info in two separate boxes. Factbook is not available for all packages, it's only available on Desktop from Basic upwards, and on mobile from Starter upwards.

[edit] Home icon

Tapping this brings up a screen containing 4 items: featured items, the special store items, the dashboard, and the explore choice. These items have an arrow just to the left of each one. It can be used to turn the display of that item on or off. The gear icon in the upper left lets you edit these items and of course the "done" will go back to the book. You can also use the toc and search field at the top to find a location in your default Bible and go there.

The Featured items and store items will display deals and items that you might be interested in if you have an Internet connection. The dashboard shows some choices of things you might want to study just by tapping the item. This area can be edited to allow you to define a set of books you want for a particular study. The Explore option can bring things to your attention that you may want to look over.

[edit] Library icon

Tapping the Library icon produces a list of eBooks that you own. It has three modes at the top center. The middle one shows your library. They can be displayed as a text list or shown as book covers using the selection choice in the upper left corner. The upper right corner has the "done" button to return to your eBook.

Just below that line is a library count that shows how many books you have, or if you use the filter, searching it will show how many hits you have. On the right edge you have a choice of how to sort the list. This can be done by title, by ratings, or by Recent. Note that there are times when the program changes this sort order.

Besides book mode there are Reading and Store modes. Store mode provides another way to look at the "book store". Reading mode show books you have specifically identified to read. You can see the list of read later and read now books. Read now shows progress as a linear line. A menu at the right can show more details include TOC and provides setting results yourself. (There is also a group reading section for shared books but they can't be started here.)

[edit] Filtering

Just to the right of the type-in search field is a funny shaped icon that you won't want to ignore. It can provide a list of a wide variety of ways to filter search your library to help you find the book or books you are interested it. This is a very powerful feature has you are not limited to just one filter. You can add additional filters and you can use them with a single type-in search argument which must be entered last. (On the Logos Desktop version this appears to the left as a column beside the book lists.)

The filters can be used to simply find how many books you own for that filter item. Generally the total of the entries will account for all of your books but there are exceptions. The entries are sorted with the most books listed first. Entries with a same number of books are sort in alphabetical order. The filters include:

  • Downloads - downloaded books on this device, or select Not Downloaded which is show books you own and sample books.
  • Audio - audio books available or Resources with Audio, this does not account for all your books.
  • Subject - related to categories but are focused on NT, OT, Full Bible, etc. Note that there can be more than one subject for a particular book. If so and you select one it will show how many have the selected subject and also will list other subjects with how many that also apply. These may also be tapped to add an additional filter. It is also possible to search for one of those secondary entries first if you know their name. You can even filter more using this technique. To search this way type in the entries with the name subject first. For example you might want to find - subject: Baptist, sermons.
  • Type - Categories of books, more specific than the Subject choices. (In the desktop version type is entered first). There is entry called "Monograph" which means a book with one subject but in practice this is the left over Category for everything other than the ones listed below it.
  • User tags (added in v9), a list of separate tags. Does not account for all your books.
  • User ratings (added in V9), 5 Stars through 1 Star. Does not account for all your books.
  • Language - good to select books you can read.
  • Author - a list of authors you own will be listed, sorted by number of books you own for each author.
  • Series - a list of sets you own. Does not account for all your books.
  • Publisher - sorted by number of books - with an annoying "more" that you have to press every 5 or 10 entries.
  • Updated - When in last 14, 30 days. (added in 9.0)
  • Added - When in last 14, 30 days (added in 9.0)

The Logos Desktop version has more filters including user supplied ones. You can use multiple filters to narrow down the list.

If you prefer or want to add to the filters you can type-in the argument to search, you can also add a prefix such as: "title:Matthew" to avoid finding an author by that name. These prefixes include such things as title, author, type, etc. and are similar to the groupings in the filter list.

[edit] Book List

The book list also displays results and displays some information about each book. It shows the usage if you have referred to the book before, it shows if the eBook has been downloaded, and it can provide info (i) about the book simply by tapping the (i) icon. You can scroll the list and switch the display of the results. You can also choose to download the book for faster access or when using the program without a Wi-Fi connection.

[edit] Total Books

The total number of books shown in this app may be more than the ones you have in your account. The Logos Desktop contains the accurate total of books you own but the mobile app has a few extras that are similar to samples. They can be read if you wish but you cannot download them. An example is the "Apocrypha of the Old Testament". There are more in various languages for Bibles and bible related books to get you started. They will not show up in your copy of Logos Desktop. There are nearly 2 dozen of these eBooks. They include Bibles in several languages.

The Verbum Catholic app will provide "The Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition" as a sample if you don't already own it and will set it as your default Bible. To use it if you don't own it you must have an Internet connection. It also provides the Clementine Vulgate (Latin Vulgate) and a Greek New Testament from Tischendorf.

[edit] Categories (Types)

Categories is called "Types" in the filter for Logos. They are listed by the total number of books you own in that type. A type for zero books is not listed. The grouping of "Subjects" contain a similar list but often includes more books than would be shown under the similar name in types. These entries are ordered based on the number of books you own in that type.

The Categories below are samples and are sorted in groups of similar types. These may include:

  • Monograph - Books on one subject. This is the most popular entry; it is assigned to books without a better type. To find the one you want will likely need another filter. The "subject" filter is usually a good choice to narrow the list. This is the same as in Logos Desktop.
  • Bible Commentary - This is often a very long list. It includes Commentary books that cover the entire Bible and books that may only cover a single book (or a few books) of the Bible.
  • Bible - This will show some study bibles if they have an embedded bible
  • Study Bible - These would include a Bible in hard copy and may include one in these sets if it isn't standard. Generally these will work with any translation.
  • Bible Study
  • Study Guide
  • Bible Harmony
  • Bible notes
  • Bible Cross-Reference Index
  • Bible Concordance
  • Bible Apparatus
  • Biblical Theology - generally has the word Biblical in title.
  • Systematic Theology - This usually includes the this type of theology. Use subject: theology for a larger list
  • Sermons
  • Sermon outlines
  • Encyclopedia - also shows some Dictionaries.
  • Dictionary
  • Media Collection - This shows Audio, Video, and books consisting of pictures.
  • Atlas
  • Illustrations
  • Courseware Media Collection - These are part of a training course.
  • Courseware Textbook
  • Workbook
  • Calendar Devotional - Daily reading but may include weekly or other calendar
  • Confessional Document
  • Collected Work
  • Grammar
  • Lexicon - vocabulary of a language
  • Lectionary
  • Manual - covers operation of hardware or software.
  • Handbook
  • Glossary
  • Quotations
  • Magazine
  • Personal Journal
  • Journal
  • Prayers
  • Hymnal
  • Biography
  • Autobiography
  • Bibliography
  • Church History
  • Ancient Manuscript

And a few more.

[edit] Display

The library display has two choices. One is the list with an small image of the cover on the left edge. This contains the most ready information about the books with text information on the book name and author. It also shows whether the book is downloaded and can be used to download a book. There is a menu (...) on the side to let you see information about the book, a download option (or delete) and the ability to search the book. It will also show a reset option on books you have been reading. For Books that have been opened it shows a graphic doughnut shape that shows you the portion of the book that has been read. It also tries to show how long you have read the book. Touching any of this except the menu and download icon will open the book.

The second view shows the covers primarily with a small area at the bottom. You will have to read the name on the cover to readily read the name of the book. Below the book is an icon that is an i with a circle around it. This is for info. If the circle is filled the book is downloaded to the device. This is where you should touch for information about the book. Touching anywhere else will open the book. If you have been reading the book a bar showing progress will appear under the book itself. A date may also appear but is generally truncated due to length.

[edit] Select

Just to the left of the two icons showing display choices there is the word select. Click it will display a select bubble to the left of each entry. You can toggle the selection of individual files by tapping the bubble. You can also select all as a starting point. At the bottom of the screen there is a area showing the number of books selected and a menu on the right side. The menu offers the choice to download the selected books or remove them. In the top right of the screen is a cancel command that can be clicked to end the Select command. Version 9 added a couple of commands to select books you may want to read later or unselect the books. Useful to keep track of books.

[edit] Store

In the Library a long bar at the top has three parts. The center displays the local library entries while the right bar offers a link to the store. This link to the store is intended to aid in looking for an item that you didn't have in your library. It attempts to use filters to home in on what you may be looking for or a recent display of the same section as the one shown in Home. Near the bottom is a section that has its own Category filter which can be used to find what you might want, including all resources. When you click on one of these you will have a list of books displayed and a search line at the top of the display. It contains a category filter at the bottom of the page when your scroll down. This Library feature is now in the desktop version only implemented differently.

[edit] Reading plan

The reading plan is a version 9 addition to the Library top bar dividing it into three parts. In order to use this you must first set up a reading plan for each book you want in the list. Progress is shown and the TOC can be clicked for progress. The reading plan, like everything else, becomes an entry in the open books section. It can be erase to remove clutter and will be regenerated when accessed.

[edit] Phones

Phones typically have a smaller screen and they have a few difference from the tablet version of the program. These differences are primarily related to the Library view.

  • There is only one Library view, it shows the list of books with a picture of the cover on the left side.
  • There is no doughnut shaped image showing the books you are reading and the progress. Instead they have a line just under the book cover image that shows the same information. If the book is open the menu (...) on the right of the book will add an entry to allow resetting the book status.
  • Following a Bible verse link will only show you one verse no matter how many are shown in the link. To see the rest you can follow the link to the Bible itself.

[edit] More on Active eBooks

The active book icon shows a number that tells you how many books you have open on this device. Tapping the icon shows a smaller version of the page you were on and the screen can be scrolled left and right to show the other books. A plus sign at the bottom or at the left or right edge of the display can be used to open additional books. (Tapping one of them will open the Library screen. tapping cancel on the library screen will return to this screen.)

Each open book will have an icon in the upper left (an X to close the book) and in the upper right (to make divide the screen in half). Tapping the upper right icon will allow you to open another book that will share the screen. Once you open the book it will fill the bottom half of the screen. You can drag the line in the middle and move it up or down. If you tap either book the bottom banner will appear and two top banners, one for each book will be shown.

The upper left corner of the screen contains a linked chain. Tapping this will open a small circle on the of the books that are open. To can tap as many of those circles as you wish. Tapping done in the upper right corner will make the chain symbol appear on the books themselves. All of these books will be kept in sync if they contain Bible references such as a commentary. If you change the page of one of the chained books the others will automatically stay in sync. You can use this to study a set of books such as multiple commentaries all locked to a Bible chapter that you might be studying. This is often done when you have two pages of different books on a single display. Tapping the link command again will let you add or remove books from the chain.

The lower right corner has a command that will view your favorite Bible translation at any time. If you haven't picked one yet this command will show your list.

You can also rearrange the books on the screen. Simple tap and hold the book you want to move and drag it to the new location.

Note that the books can be rotated and they will appear properly both here in the active view and on the reading page. If the screen is divided to show two books they will be shown left/right for landscape viewing and up/down for portrait viewing.

[edit] Layout

The layout feature is in the lower left corner. It will allow you to save the current layout (all the open books, the order, they are in, chains, etc.) or, over time you can save a lot of different layouts based on your studies. The idea is to take the current layout you are using to study a book of the Bible, perhaps, and save it so you can use the active area for a different purpose. Only the active area has opened books. The saved layout will keep your place and it knows about each and every book that was open when it was saved. You can return to the study exactly where you left off. The layout also shows a history of books you have opened which can be used to reopen a book or a full layout. If you start a new active area the old one will be saved, either by name if it was named or in history. The nature of this app is that there is always a book displayed on the screen. You cannot return from an active entry that does not have a book in it. Note also that if you tap a book in the library it will add it to the open area (even if a copy is already there) and then open it. The layout data is shared between Mobile apps.

Note that the Desktop version has an independent version of the layout. It is located on the tool bar near the right end. It has more control over the size and arrangement of books. You can also remove all books from the display.

[edit] More on the menu

The menu contains a collection of commands or screens. With the exception of the "settings" covered earlier this menu is mostly less used screens or advanced screens that are not as important as the ones already covered. There is a reference to the "store". Many of these selections have submenus of their own. If there are sub items there will be a "<more items" entry which really means return to the menu. Many of the items in this list would need a separate entry and will be covered as I learn it well (to be done).

In Version 9 of this mobile app shows this menu is divided into sections to make it easier to find the command you may want. (Version 8 had a similar list but no sections) Many of the choices are new and similar to the ones in the Logos Desktop. It includes:

  • Popular - These are expected to be used often
    • Search - Another Search bar with a help page for searching. The results are placed on a page that is in the active pages area. There is really no back button so you will just use the icons at the bottom.
    • Factbook - Finally showed up when I bought Logos 9 Fundamentals.
    • Passage Guide - This places an active page in your app. You enter a bible passage and it collects data from your books about the passage. It also knows about recent passages you have used. It provides links into the documents it located. It searches commentaries, cross references, parallel passages, Media resources, topics, interesting words. This page can be added to favorites, it will exist in active pages until you remove it.
    • Bible Word Study - Look up words in the Bible, English, Hebrew, or Greek.
    • Text Comparison - Compare to translations of the Bible.
    • Store - Here you can view the Logos store or whatever store supports the app.
  • Library
    • Books - list containing all your books, it is only a half screen and intended for quick look up but it works like the main library command.
    • Audio - list containing all your media
    • Reading Plans - link to build reading plans for Bible reading etc.
    • Courses - The list of courses you may own.
    • Favorites - You can designate favorite books and they will show up in this list.
    • History - Shows which eBooks you have visited recently and other activities in active lists. This can be used to return or repeat a command.
  • Documents
    • Notes - links to any personal notes you have created. Notes can be placed in a Notebook serving to collect them. They are shared with the desktop version of Logos but for some reason they cannot be sorted or rearranged although they can be edited.
    • Sermons - you can select specific sermons here if you have any.
    • Passage Lists - also showed up only when I bought the Logos 9 Fundamentals upgrade - It provides multiple lists
    • Clippings - you can select specific clippings here if you have any.
    • Prayers - You can make or edit a prayer list for a reminder.
  • Guides
    • Passage Guide
    • Exegetical Guide - similar to Topic guide.
    • Topic Guide - Place a topic in the search field and find information on the topic, including Bible references.
    • Bible Word Study
  • Tools
    • Search - same as the search option.
    • Factbook - major new feature with 9.0 here and in Popular group menu
    • Reference Scanner - This will scan (take an image) using the built in camera. This scans the text for Bible verses and shows them to you with links. They can be sorted. Useful to work with a paper document you might be reading.
    • Text Comparison - compare Bible versions.
    • Media - video and audio
    • Canvas - Canvas requires a purchase of this feature.
    • Atlas - shows maps if you own this feature. Normally any atlas' you own can be viewed like any other eBook. This command will leave the Logos Mobile app and bring up the app.logos.com in your browser.
  • Community
    • Faithlife Groups App
    • Church Presentations - submenus
    • Community Notes - submenus
  • Settings
    • Sync your data - This is a good idea to keep your other apps and your PC in sync so you can continue reading on a different app.
    • Set preferred Bible as default.
    • Settings - This was covered earlier. It contains your account, your Notebook, and a place to send feedback.
    • Help - This is not help on using this tool. It is rather help in finding things inside Logos, reviews, video training, forums, knowledge base, etc. It also contain app info such a version number.

Any of the commands listed here that generate a page or pages (such as Notes) will be shown in the Active books function and can be manipulated there as with any book.

[edit] Reading eBooks

There are a lot a special features related to eBook reading.

  • You can set red type for Jesus' words in your Bibles
  • Blue in the text is normally reserved for linking to places. These will normally be shown as popups that can be read in place and then removed. Blue text might be on the Title page where it is only used to made the text standout.
    • in the eBook, such as footnotes
    • in your default Bible for Bible references.
    • longer references to places in the book. You can return to your place using "<". Some books have page numbers shown in the reference area. You can enter a page number to jump to that page in those books.
    • Even if the Bible references are not blue, give them a try. Some books do not use this convention but will still work.
  • You can tap and hold a second on a word. It will be highlighted and will show you the definition from dictionaries you own.
  • You can tap and hold a second and then drag one or both end of the highlighted word or words and a menu will appear on the page that will let you pick a color to make a permanent highlight of those words for reference later. You can also cancel these highlights by using the cancel button.
  • There may be differences between the phone version and the tablet version of an app due to screen sizes.

The Library view shows a circle with progress shown on it using a darkened line for books you are reading. (In book cover view this is a line under the book cover.) You can reset this completely including removing the circle by choosing the book menu and selecting "Reset reading progress". The progress shows both the amount you have read and where in the book you have read.

[edit] Maps, figures, and tables

  • Images, in particular maps, can be selected (double click) and made larger in the eBook for studying. This does not work on all books or all images in a book.
  • In many books the image is limited by the width of the column which can make maps really hard to see. If you need bigger images you may need to change the column settings to a single column. Using a single column will often allow the map to be larger and turning to landscape mode can make it even larger. There is a large variety of capabilities depending on the book.
  • Tables may not fit in portrait mode of smaller devices, try rotating the screen but they may not fit anyway especially if they include images in the table. You can also change the font size to something smaller to aid in seeing more of the table. Using a single column may help here as well.
Compare Web app on the left with Mobile app on the right using split view in iPadOS.

[edit] Using multiple books

There are times when you want to use multiple books live at the same time. This can easily improve your study by having several commentaries, for example, open while you are study a particular book of the Bible. Primarily, this is why you would want a split screen which is supported by this app (shown on the right). However, there is another technique available as well. Most of the apps have a default mode scroll the reading down and up as apposed to sideways for page changes (This seems to be default all apps except the iPad one). However this can be changed in any app using the settings by turning on or off "scroll mode". The advantage of scroll mode is that it offers the ability to use swiping left or right to provide access to other open books instead of changing pages.

To make this work better you can using the "open eBook" icon and rearrange this books around the one you want to center on. This can also work with the dual screen but, of course, the books in the dual screen will also scroll up or down to change pages. Note that this does not work on the Logos web app.

The chain image (icon) can be used to tie books together in sync so that they will scroll automatically. It can be used on individual and multiple books.

Note that scroll mode is always single column while on; turning off scroll mode with offer dual columns on larger screens or landscape orientation on all screens. Note that page boundaries will disappear in scroll mode.

[edit] Media Collections

Media Collections include Audio, Video, and Graphic Images. All of these are supported by this app but finding them can be a problem.

[edit] Audio

Audio Books have their own entry in the filters which makes them easy to find. They can be used like any other book although it can be tricky to get the top/bottom menu choices; dragging the finger down on the screen will turn them on. Another way to find them is to use the type:Media Collection in filters.

The accessibility feature in settings of the iPad/iPhone can be used to read books aloud by reading aloud the page that is on the screen.

[edit] Video

Video is also supported but finding them can be difficult. A search using "Video" will find most of them but not all. There is a type called Media Collection in filters but it will find them all. Many are identified as a regular book type such as Monograph, Courseware, devotional, and others.

[edit] Logos 9 upgrade

Logos adds the following features:

  • Set up a schedule to read multiple books that you want to read
  • A preaching mode is supported to show your outline or manuscript directly on the screen so that you can use your unit for slides and even a built in timer to keep track of the time.
  • Factbook is now on the app. It was previous only on the Logos Desktop app. It can take a subject or topic you want to use and find all of the references in your library. Requires Logos 9 Fundamentals.
  • Use the scanner to snap pictures of a document and look up verses.
  • New search and navigation functionality.
  • Save Reference Scanner results to a Passage List
  • All new Reading Plans tool, quickly start a reading plan from almost any book

Some of these are dependent on owning the Logos Desktop version 9.

[edit] Download apps

  • iOS and iPadOS: Logos Bible Study Tools, Faithlife Study Bible, Faithlife Ebooks, Biblia Logos, Verdum Catholic, Bible Study Bundle (Subscription)
  • Android: Logos Bible App, Study Bible by Faithlife, Faithlife Ebooks, Biblia Logos, Verbum Catholic Bible Study
  • Amazon Fire Tablets: Look under Lifestyle and then Religion & Spirituality

[edit] Using Logos without Internet

The Logos Mobile app and the Logos desktop app with both work without an Internet connection. However there are limitations, in particular, with the mobile app. Without the Internet:

  • There is no sync between devices. This should be expected. The sync will be restored when the Internet is restored.
  • Books that you have not downloaded will not be available. Generally the desktop version downloads everything but the Mobile app does not. Most people only download their default Bible and a few books they are interested in currently.
  • The library view continues to show all of the books even without an Internet connection. Use the filtering feature to select only downloaded books otherwise they will be mixed in the list of books and can be identified because of a missing cover on all the other books.
  • Of course the Logos web sites will be unavailable without an Internet connection. This show up mostly on the Home page where some items will be missing and of course tapping them won't go anywhere.
