Category:Formats
This category collects all of the format articles. eBook formats, sound formats, and compression formats are covered as well as format standards. In Windows a file format is, by convention, indicated by its extension. But that is not always the case of other systems. See PDB for the conventions used on PalmOS which can cause confusion among Windows users. Some of these formats are now industry standards.
This site provides a lot of specific information on formats related to eBooks but if you need more generalized data on formats try: http://www.fileformat.info/. It also has specific information on Character set formats with complete lists of characters.
The government has picked up the slack in preserving the specifications for out of date formats and even current ones. Check digital preservation .gov for more information and specifications.
http://www.myformatfactory.com/ contains descriptions of many formats for audio, video, image, and documents.
